  • With Superior I ratings awarded to both concert band and concert choir, Orion High School’s music department has earned a Top 10 ranking among schools its size in the state of Illinois.

  • With Superior I ratings awarded to both concert band and concert choir, Orion High School’s music department has earned a Top 10 ranking among schools its size in the state of Illinois.
    The Illinois High School Association held sectional solo and ensemble contests on Saturday, March 4, at Rockridge High School in Edgington.
    Orion competed in Class C with Abingdon, Biggsville West Central, Brimfield, Wethersfield, Knoxville, Monmouth United, ROWVA, Princeville and Stark County.
    The organizational contest was held on Saturday, April 14, again at Rockridge. Class C schools included Abingdon, Brimfield, Wethersfield, Knoxville and Orion.
    After scores were compiled from sectionals across the state, Orion had 298.5 points, enough to secure ninth place.
    Forreston topped Class C, which had 81 schools, with 741 points.
    Orion was the highest-ranking school from the Rockridge sectionals, far
    above 30th place Stark County with 123 points.
    Other results were Knoxville, 32nd, 121 1/3 points; Wethersfield, 39th, 106 1/2; Brimfield, 41st, 103; West Central, 42nd, 99; Princeville, 51st, 72; Monmouth United, 58th, 63; ROWVA, 67th, 36; and Abingdon, 79th, six.
    At the organizational contest, judges awarded Superior I?ratings to both Orion’s concert band, directed by Jennifer Hays, and the concert choir, under the baton of Ben Holmes.
    Special Edition show choir received an Excellent II?rating.
    At solo and ensemble contest, Taylor Stock received the Best of the Day honor for her baritone saxophone solo.
    Band students with Superior I?ratings were Stock; Andrew Bainter, oboe solo; Bailey Driscoll, oboe solo; Bainter and Driscoll, oboe duet; and David Routt, trumpet solo.
    Gabe Price received an Excellent II?rating for his horn solo, the same rating Lindsay Pettifer received for her piano solo.
    Vocal soloists with Superior I ratings were Adrienne Wittenauer, Ashley Bearden, Bailey Eastin, Erika Johnson, Lindsay Pettifer, Lyndsie Fortin and Shelby Hoffman.
    Excellent II?ratings were presented to vocal soloists Allison Gallens, Colin Hepner, Jessica Vroman, Karli Pettifer, Lexi Keleher and Taylor Stock.
    Three vocal duets also received Excellent II?ratings, including Bailey Eastin and Adrienne Wittenauer; Colin Hepner and Lindsay Pettifer; and Karlie Pettifer and Megan Orr.
    Vocal soloist Morgan Dahl received a Good III?rating.
    The tradition of excellent music at Orion High School is going to continue for some time to come, as indicated by the success of Orion Middle
    School students at their contests.
    Both sixth grade choir and seventh and eighth grade choir earned Superior I ratings, and the seventh and eighth grade band received an Excellent II rating.
    Instrumental soloists with Superior I ratings were Jolee Mohr, trombone and piano; Trent Osgood, trumpet; Jacob Johnson, piano; Hailee Fair, trumpet; Wyatt Martens, trumpet; Noah Sierer, percussion; and Courtney Wiedenmann, percussion and piano.
    Ensembles with Superior I ratings included Dean Farwell, Kelly Jacobsen and Daniel Mount, percussion trio, and Noah Sierer and Courtney Wiedenmann, percussion duet.
    Page 2 of 2 - For their instrumental solos, students receiving Excellent II?ratings were Isaac Stanley, euphonium; Mykeala Palmer, clarinet; Daniel Mount, piano; Amie Daggett, trumpet; Hailee Fair, piano; Jessica Collis, flute; Michelle Zelnio, trumpet; and Victoria Roth, alto saxophone.
    Voice students with Superior I ratings for their solos were Angela Stearns, Jessica Collis, Emma Bingham, Estelle Higdon, Kylee Heatherly, Aubrey Murphy and Noah Sierer.
    Elisabeth Weiss, Emma Bingham and Jessica Collis received a Superior I rating for their trio.
    Vocal soloists with Excellent II?ratings were Hope Stropes, Taylor Morehouse, Hallie Miller and Skyler Atwell.
    The vocal ensembles receiving Excellent II ratings were Estelle Higdon and Kylee Heatherly, duet; and Angela Stearns, Hallie Miller and Hope Stropes, trio.
