Tuesday, July 3, is the date to reserve for the Orion Fireworks Festival, which includes a lighted parade at dusk and a fireworks show at Charger Field.Thursday, July 5, is the rain date.
The festival is accepting entries for the lighted parade, which will line up in the Orion High School student parking lot from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m. At dusk, the parade will travel west on 11th Avenue to Eighth Street, then turn south to 12th Avenue and return to the high school.
For safety reasons, no one can throw candy from a moving vehicle, but walkers can distribute it.
The first-place entry will receive $100; second place, $50; and third place,$25.

Entry forms are available at area businesses. They may be mailed to Orion Fireworks Festival c/o Deena Johnson, P.O. Box 664, Orion IL 61273.
The fireworks show will be at Charger Field, but the bleachers will be closed for safety reasons. Spectators should bring blankets or lawn chairs.
St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion, is hosting its annual pork chop dinner and ice cream social from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, in The Ark. The adult menu features a grilled pork chop sandwich, baked beans, potato chips, beverage and soft-serve ice cream. Children may have hot dogs instead of pork chop sandwiches.
At 6:30 p.m., the Orion Community Band will play under the back portico of The Ark. Listeners are asked to bring lawn chairs.
