Registration times, dates and place
No early registration. Anyone unable to register during the times below should phone the OMS office at (309) 526-3392.
All students new to the district—9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Aug. 2, and Friday, Aug. 3, Orion Middle School office.
All students returning to the district—9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, and 12:30 to 3:30 and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, Orion Middle School.
Late registration—By appointment only, Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Students enrolling in the Orion district for the first time must have a birth certificate from the state or county, not from a hospital.
OMS?students will receive class schedules, locker combinations, a gym lock if needed and athletic information if needed.
Parents may deposit money in student accounts with lunch program representatives.
Also, families may join Orion Athletic Boosters, Orion Music Boosters and Orion PTA.
Parents will receive the information they need to check students’ grades online.
8 a.m. to noon. Thursday, Aug. 9—Seventh and eighth grade locker move-in.
6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9—Sixth grade orientation, gym.
Tuesday, Aug. 14—Teachers’ institute.
Wednesday, Aug. 15—First full day of school (no half-day of school this year).
6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22—Open house.
Thursday, Aug. 23—School pictures.
Classes—Textbook rental $50, assignment notebooks $4, calculator $22, protractor $1. Some mini-courses have fees.
Sixth and seventh grades—Binder with folders $13.
Band/choir—Cleaning fee $5, school-owned band instrument rental $25.
Miscellaneous—Activity fee $20, technology fee $12, testing fee $10, thumb drive $8.
Physical education—Gym lock if needed $6, P.E. shirt if needed $6, P.E. shorts if needed $6.
Athletic participation fee $50 per sport, $150 maximum per student, $300 maximum per family.
Book covers—Students should have a cover on each textbook. The school sells Charger book covers, or students may use paper grocery bags (other materials do not work). They may not use adhesive paper, or tape the cover to the book.
Student absences—Parents are requested to call the OMS office at (309) 526-3392 before 9 a.m. to report the absence. Parents do not have to wait until the office opens. They may leave a message on the answering machine. Reporting the absence eliminates the need for the office to call the parents, and for the student to bring a note from home.
Parent bulletins—Starting sometime in September, these will be on the Orion Middle School section of http://orionschools.us. Each grade level has its own bulletin.
Grades—Parents can use the ID?and PIN number they received at registration to check students’ grades onlines. Mid-term grades are mailed to students who are struggling in classes. Grade reports go home with students at the end of each nine weeks.

Participation—Students going out for any sport at OMS need to fill out and turn in waivers and the top page of the athletic rules with all required signatures. The school also requires a sports physical using the Illinois High School Association form.
Passes—All-Sport passes cover 38 home games, except for tournament contests. Season passes cover home football, volleyball, basketball and wrestling events. OMS has a family rate for conference games and all home games, except for tournament contests.
