ORION—Repairs of the Orion High School roof are underway, superintendent David Deets told the Orion school board on Wednesday, July 21. Later in the meeting, board members approved raising the price of lunch at each school 25 cents.
ORION—“The crisis in state funding is far from resolved,” Orion Superintendent David Deets told the Orion school board on Wednesday, July 21. He said a couple of more tough years lie ahead. Boiling down 120 pages of financial data, the superintendent presented board members with a four-page summary of the district’s financial condition at the end of the 2009-10 budget year. Orion finished with a deficit of $140,000, he said.
ORION—Undo some of the staffing changes made in the spring, several among the baker’s dozen in the audience urged the Orion school board on Wednesday, July 21.
ORION—Nathan DeBaillie will be the interim principal at Orion High School in 2010-11, the school board decided on Wednesday, July 21. The Orion graduate has been the dean of students and athletic director since 2008.
ORION—Express registration is offered again this year at Orion High School. Students may pick up packets with all of the registration forms between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, and Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the school. The completed packet may be returned any time during registration hours listed below. After school officials review it, students may leave. The packet is not to be mailed back.
ORION—A Peoria company, Guardian Fitness, has had a Mobile Training Team working out with Orion school district personnel this summer.
ORION—Orion FFA students competed at the annual Section 3 FFA Vo-Ag Fair. The horse show took place Thursday, July 1, at Black Hawk College, Kewanee, with the help of Aaron Callahan and Drew Cotton, the equine science staff members at BHE. On Friday, July 2, the Vo-Ag Fair was held at the Henry County fairgrounds, Cambridge, with help from Fair Board member Jake Young.

SPRINGFIELD—The Orion FFA Chapter has received the Illinois Bankers’ Award for having the most comprehensive and best overall program of activities in Section 3. Orion also received two other awards at the Illinois FFA convention.

ORION—The state’s financial situation is still a mess, Superintendent David Deets told the Orion school board on Wednesday, June 16. With only two weeks left before the district’s new fiscal year begins, it’s hard to build a budget when no one knows how much revenue Orion will receive, the superintendent said.

ORION—Kelly Hutton and James Matson are the 2010 recipients of the Stephanie Jones Memorial Award. The award is conferred upon two seniors, one girl and one boy, who live life to the fullest, always find time to laugh, and love everybody.
ORION—Alyssa Zwicker and Matt Thor are the 22nd and 23rd recipients of the Tom W. and Lindsey G. Nicholson Memorial Award. Zwicker and Thor were presented with the awards at graduation on Sunday, May 23, at Orion High School. Each received $750. The award is conferred on two seniors, a boy and a girl, who consistently exemplify the best qualities of a congenial and principled lifestyle at school and in the community.
ORION—Brandy Nolan will be the new counselor at Orion High School, the Orion school board decided on Wednesday evening, June 16. The board also hired a new English teacher, Susan Beuth, for OHS, where she will be the play sponsor and one of the senior class sponsors.
