A five-point lead in the first quarter held up for visiting Sherrard, which went on to edge Orion 54-50 in varsity boys basketball on Friday, Jan. 29.

“They came out and they were better than us,” Charger coach Brent Hutton said.

Sherrard had a better offensive strategy, and Orion was not ready, he said.

The Chargers trailed the entire game, the coach said. They fought through adversity, but they never got things going offensively. It was tough to score on Friday night.

Tanner Williams got his jump shot working and hit big baskets, but otherwise the Chargers were not in sync, Hutton said.

Early in the game, Orion failed to get the ball inside to the post, he said. In the second half, Sherrard collapsed on the post.

Given their problems inside, the Chargers had to score from outside, Hutton said.

As a coach, he is supposed to have a better game plan, he said.

Playing in a gym packed to the rafters, the Chargers didn’t perform at a level they wanted to reach on Hall of Fame night, Hutton said.

He expressed hope the boys will play up to a higher level in the final weeks of the season.
