The Lewistown Lady Indians came back from a near defeat once, but couldn’t do it a second time in losing 13-25, 26-24, 23-25 to Illini Central in the IESA 8-2A State Volleyball Tournament’s semifinal round on Saturday.

The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first game behind the serving of Gentri Fangmeier. The Lady Indians closed to within 8-4 and later to within 10-6 when Grace Evans blocked an IC hit.
Unfortunately for Lewistown, IC had the next push as coach Jim Newell’s team built their lead to 15-6, receiving five points from Ella Wallace in the process. A sideout got the ball back for the Lady Indians before Ella Potter scored the game’s next
However, Lewistown never got closer the rest of the game. The Lady Cougars upped their advantage to 21-11. Later, they led 22-13 before Alyssa Stewart served the final three points in the game.
In the second game, Lewistown had leads of 5-0 and 12-6 on points from Macy Mikulich and Addison Yurkovich. However, the Lady Cougars fought back, finally tying the score at 15-15 before taking a 16-15 lead.
IC’s lead grew to 18-15 on points from Wallace. Later they led 21-16 as Isabella McKinney chipped in with two points.The Lady Cougars seemed to have the game in hand, holding a 23-19 lead before the Lady Indians began their comeback.
Lewistown got the next sideout before two points from Yurkovich narrowed the Lady Indians’ deficit to 23-22. Once play resumed after a Newell timeout, two more Yurkovich points put the Lady Indians ahead 24-23.
IC gained the next sideout before a next serve gave Lewistown a 25-24 lead, which set up Chelsey Hopkins’ game-winning serve.
In the decisive third game, Lewistown turned a 6-4 deficit into a 9-6 lead on points from Hopkins. IC turned the tide, using a 12-3 run to forge an 18-12 lead on points from Bailey Clark and McKinney.
Now it was Lewistown’s turn to chip away on sideouts and on points from Mikulich, Hampton, and Yurkovich. Moments later, a sideout and two points from Hopkins knotted the action at 21-all.
Lewistown though never got the lead at the end of the match. Points from Evans and Potter closed them to within 24-23 before a Fangmeier kill turned into the match-winning point.
