November 15, 1965 – March 13, 2018

Vivian (Vahling) Ver Huel, 52, passed away on March 13, 2018 at home in West Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by her family after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 16 at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd. in Clive, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 17 at the West Des Moines Open Bible Church, 1100 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery. There will also be a Memorial Mass honoring Vivian at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 N. 21st St., Mattoon, IL on Saturday, March 24 at 10:30 AM. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Iowa Council of the United Blind, 200 Parkview Drive, Waukee, Iowa 50263.

Vivian was born on November 15, 1965 in Mattoon, the daughter of Harold and Jane Vahling. Following high school graduation, she attended and graduated from the University of Illinois. Vivian was an Independent Living Teacher with the Iowa Department for the Blind for 27 years. Her positive attitude and determination were an inspiration to the clients she counseled, her family, and everyone who knew her. Vivian enjoyed traveling, playing the piano, cooking, making cards and gifts for family and friends, and spending time with family and friends. She had a strong Christian faith.

Vivian is survived by her husband of 24 years, Matt Ver Huel; her parents, Harold and Jane Vahling of Mattoon; siblings, Bryan (Michelle) Vahling of Sullivan, Kathy (Kent) Spencer of Saint Charles, and Steve Vahling of Mattoon; nieces and nephews include Luke and Megan Spencer of St. Charles, Evan Vahling of Sullivan, and Avery Vahling of Mattoon.
