A drive-by shooting in Streator late Tuesday evening led to the death of a young mother and the subsequent manhunt for three suspects in Dwight, according to authorities. Though two evaded immediate apprehension by police, all three were eventually taken into custody.
The victim was later identified by LaSalle County Coroner William Wujek as Maria Delatorre, 33, of Streator.
According to the Illinois State Police, the Streator Police Department sent out an alert that a 33-year-old woman died after being shot Tuesday night a little before 9 p.m. The shooting occurred in the 200 block of West 9th Street. Delatorre was taken to the OSF Center for Health-Streator emergency room where she later died from her injuries. Wujek said an autopsy was performed.
The suspects’ vehicle crashed at the intersection of routes 17 and 66 in Dwight while being pursued by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Police; one was apprehended immediately after the crash but a male and a female fled on foot.
The male and female were believed to be armed, Illinois State Police reported, adding that ISP patrol, Dwight Police, Grundy County Sheriff’s Police and LCSP had secured a perimeter with a staging area at Casey’s. SWAT and ISP Air Operations were eventually involved in the search. The ISP Air Operations crews flew over the area while building searches were being conducted.
According to police radio traffic, the search concentrated on a rural area near the railroad tracks both north and west of the intersecting highways where the crash occurred.
At 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Dwight Police Facebook page issued an alert profiling the alleged perpetrators and asking that residents call 911 should they suspect anything.
“Dwight Police along with numerous other agencies are looking for two suspects who are considered armed and dangerous. They are a male black (possibly wearing shorts) and a female black. Last seen on the west side of town. If you see or hear anything suspicious call 911 immediately,” the DPD post said.
Eventually, the male and female suspects were arrested in Dwight without incident, the ISP reported. As of press time, authorities did not release the names of those taken into custody in connection with the manhunt and the drive-by shooting, nor was a motive indicated.
A GoFundMe page was created by Christian Cantu, sister of Delatorre, to help raise money for funeral expenses, while describing the anguish the family was experiencing.
“My niece and nephew lost their mom last night,” Cantu wrote. “My niece is 9 and nephew is 14, they also had a little brother. This is just to help out with any funeral expenses and anything extra (for) the kids. My heart breaks for my nephew and niece she loved her kids so much and they loved her, it’s going to be difficult for everyone. Anything helps, thank you.”
