Who and what inspired you to enter public service?
It has always been my belief that if you are able, you need to give back to the community. You have the responsibility to provide the next generation with opportunities.
Why did you seek this position?
My father was on a school board when I was growing up.
You need to offer to help with the skills you have.
What are your biggest challenges as a public servant? How do you handle them?
Listening to the concerns of individuals and understanding your responsibility to the whole.
Listen.
There is no small issue.
Plan.
I want my grandkids to have a great school.
What moments have been the most memorable in your public service?
Making the tough decisions because of limited financial resources.
Working through a very difficult teacher contract negotiation.
Being part of building the middle school and the high school addition. (They will serve the community well into the future.)

Daughter, Nicki, second-grade teacher in Cedar Rapids; son-in-law, Marti, a teacher; and their child, Everleigh, 1.
