Vandals damaging restrooms and the bandshell in Central Park will be prosecuted, Orion village president Jim Cooper said at the village board meeting on Monday, June 6.

“Vandalism at Central Park will not be tolerated,” Cooper said.

Sheriff Jim Padilla said a Crimestoppers reward will be offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the damage.

Trustee Roger Peterson believes the vandals are students from fourth through eighth grade.

The most recent incident occurred on Thursday, June 2, or Friday, June 3, Peterson said Monday night.

Main Street Orion volunteers removed gum from the bandshell and washed it, executive director Debbie Ford said.

Vandals have been causing problems in the park for more than a month.

Children plugged stools and sinks and threw toilet paper balls that stuck on the ceiling, Peterson reported at the Monday, May 16, meeting.

If the vandalism continues, the village may need to lock the restrooms, he said.

Peterson is asking parents to be aware of what their children are doing at the park.

Also, Trustee Dale Stiles has mentioned the problems to the police.

The village is looking into security cameras that will
cover the bandshell and restrooms, and allow officials to identify the vandals, Trustee Steve Newman said.

Orion will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the band shell in 2013.
