Garrett Jacobs is Mr. April for a special calendar produced by the Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria.

Garrett is the son of Adam and Stephanie Jacobs of Orion and the grandson of Tom and Dee Daily of Geneseo and Bill and Marcia Jacobs of Coal Valley.

He was born April 30, 2010, with VACTERL syndrome, a non-random association of birth defects. For Garrett, the syndrome caused spinal, cardiac, rectal and renal problems. He also was born missing a radius in his left forearm.

As a result, Garrett and his parents have spent many hours at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

Each year, doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital select patients to be included in the hospital’s annual calendar.

“All of the children in the calendar have disabilities,” said Stephanie.
Children featured range from infants to pre-teens.

The children were featured in their birthday months.

“It was such an honor to have Garrett selected,” she said.

Earlier this fall, Garrett had a photo session at the hospital for the calendar. Photos were taken by a former nurse turned photographer, said Stephanie.

“She took a bunch of photos in different poses, and she was the one who got to pick the photos for the calendar,” explained Stephanie.

Each month features a large photo of the child, as well as two smaller pictures.

Photos selected for the 2012 calendar were revealed at a special reception at the hospital in October.

“I cried when I saw the photos. It was very touching,” said Stephanie. “Everything was done very top notch.”

All proceeds from the calendar support the Children’s Hospital of Illinois, which is affiliated with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Calendars are available at the hospital gift shop.
