THE ISSUE
More and more often, vandals are causing damage to Orion’s Central and Love parks. But village officials are fighting back.
BACKGROUND
In September, vandals damaged a bench that Alek Kline built in November 2010 for his Eagle Scout project.
The vandals used a vehicle ro ram the bench, cracking its 4x4 support posts.
Orion trustee Roger Peterson, who chairs the recreation committee, and Park Superintendent Arnie Sandberg, repaired the bench and returned it to Love Park.
WHAT'S NEXT
Angered about the damage, Orion Village President Jim Cooper and village trustees have vowed to crack down on those responsible for it.
“The vandalism that’s taking place is unacceptable,” Cooper said. “We catch one of those kids, we’re going to make an example of them.”
Police will be asked “to catch the convicts who are damaging our parks,” he said.
Trustee Steve Newman, the building and grounds chairman, is looking into the installation of security cameras to protect the band shell and the Orion Community Veterans Monument in Central Park.
