Mike Woerhle was home alone when the fire broke out, Orion fire chief Larry Anderson said. He was not injured, although the couple lost a three-legged cat they had rescued. Orion ambulance director Brian Stoudt said Trinity transported a firefighter to Illini Hospital, Silvis, where he was treated and released. Anderson said the firefighter returned to the fire to continue helping.

Orion firefighters and ambulance crews were toned out at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, for a basement fire in the Mike and Dottie Woerhle home on Hillcrest Road, rural Orion.

Because there were no hydrants, fire chief Larry Anderson requested tankers and personnel from Osco, Andover, Colona, Sherrard, Geneseo, Barstow and Coal Valley. Water had to be fetched from a hydrant near Lutheran Cemetery.

The home  was a total loss following the fire, Anderson said. Mike Woerhle found the basement in flames following an attempt to disconnect a gas dryer near a woodburning stove.
