Orion's Thorian Twyner just won a 12-3 decision over Stanford Olympia's Kameron Carpenter in semifinals at the state tournament in Assembly Hall on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.
The Charger junior (38-1) will wrestle sophomore Billy Chancey (41-2) of Braidwood Reed-Custer in the 125-lb. championship bout this evening. The grand march begins at 6:15 p.m., followed by the gold-medal matches.
Twyner controlled Carpenter throughout the semifinal bout, never allowing him to make any kind of move.
Twenty seconds into the bout, Twyner scored the first of his takedowns. Midway through the period, he added a near fall for a 4-0 lead.
With 25 seconds to go in the period, Twyner cut Carpenter loose. The Charger still had enough time to get a takedown with six seconds on the clock.
Carpenter started the second period in the down position. Fifteen seconds later, Twyner let him go again.
That let Twyner notch another takedown for an 8-2 lead.
In the third period, Twyner needed only 15 seconds to get a reversal . With 10 seconds left in the match, the Charger cut Carpenter for the third time.
Twyner got the last of his takedowns as the match ended.
