Donald Oscar LaVerne Nelson, age 91, of Orion died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by Masonic Lodge #535 A.F. & A.M. Burial was at Western Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran.
Donald was born July 21, 1920, in Orion, the son of Carl Oscar and Hilda Sophia Lindburg Nelson. He married Vera Mae Carlson in St. Louis on Oct. 10, 1941.
She preceded him in death on May 18, 1990. He then married Shirley Taets Enyeart in Orion in January 1992.
Donald was employed in quality control with John Deere in Moline for 20 years, retiring in January 1965. He also worked for Parrish Feed in Osco and never retired from farming.
Donald was one of the oldest living members of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Orion, a member of the Moline Consistory, and a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau.
Donald enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Nelson; son, Rollin (Judy) Nelson of Freeport; grandson, Jeremy Nelson of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughter, Gina (Jeff) Nelson-Boop of Pearl City; two great-grandsons, Connor and Garrett Boop; step-children, Vicki (Gary) Carrington of Atkinson, John (Cindy) Enyeart of Erie, Conni (Steve) Bristol of Geneseo, Tom (Vicky) Enyeart of Atkinson, Kay (Ed) McCoy of Anchorage, Alaska, Jerry (Darcy) Enyeart of Atkinson andLarry (Jo) Enyeart of Normal; several step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Nelson; brother, Carl Nelson; and nephew, Lowell Nelson.
