Orion High School graduate Jena Malmen has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for the Big Ten’s Indiana University.
During the spring, Malmen had one of the most productive seasons a freshman has ever had at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids.
The Orion native started all but one game as the catcher for a Kirkwood team that finished fourth in the national poll and seventh at the national tournament this season.
Malmen helped lead the Eagles to a 54-11 record. She posted impressive numbers at the plate, hitting a nation-leading 28 home runs on the year. She also had impressive numbers in several other offensive categories including RBIs (74), hits (72), doubles (20), and walks (27).
Malmen was named NJCAA second team All American, NFCA first team All American, and NFCA/Diamond National Catcher of the Year.
She posted a 3.9 grade point average at Kirkwood. Malmen is planning on a degree in athletic training.
