Donald W. McDowell, 71, of Woodhull, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, in his home.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull. Private burial is at a later date.
Memorials may be left to Clover Township Fire Department or Tri-County Ambulance Service.
He was born Dec. 2, 1938, in Galesburg, the son of Wayne and Dorothy Stickle McDowell. He graduated from AlWood High School. He married Sandra A. Reedy on Dec. 27, 1957, in Corinth, Miss.
Don was a self-employed carpenter in the Woodhull area for more than 30 years, a career he truly enjoyed.
He served two terms on the Woodhull Village Board and was a member of the Clover Township Fire Department for 16 years, serving seven years as Fire Chief.
He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and gardening. For many years he coached boys Little league and girls softball. In his later years, he could be found playing ball with the neighborhood kids. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed watching sports.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; three daughters, Donna (Bill) Metzler and Dena (Mark Mueller) Lindquist, all of Orion, and Barb (Gene) Colburn of Alpha; two sons, Doog (Lisa) McDowell of Woodhull and Mike (Jennifer) McDowell of Milan; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby (Joe) Graves of Galesburg and Marth (Jimmie) Johnson of Altona; one brother, Bob (Susan) McDowell of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
