Daryl Ross Albaugh, 75, of Moline died Saturday, July 31, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at First Christian Church, East Moline. Visitation was from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the family, the church or Genesis Hospice.
Daryl Ross Albaugh was born in Des Moines on Sept. 24, 1934, to Otis E. and O. Grace Albaugh.
The family moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1939. Daryl attended schools in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1953. He attended Mason City Junior College and Iowa State College, Ames.
In 1955, Daryl and several friends joined the U.S. Navy. He attained the rank of 3rd Class Quartermaster, serving aboard U.S.S. Rupertus DD851 in Long Beach, Calif.
Daryl returned to Mason City in 1957. He married Carma Wilke on February 8, 1958, at Wesley Methodist Church, Mason City.
He worked at State Brand Creameries.
In 1967, he started his broadcast advertising career with KGLO Radio/Television.
Daryl joined the Mason City Jaycees in 1967 and was elected president in 1969. The club had 180 members in 1967 and after he became president, the membership rose to 285. The chapter was nominated as the #1 Chapter in Iowa.
In 1969 he was president of the Iowa Jaycee Presidents’ Association.
In 1974 Lee Enterprises transferred Daryl and his family to WMDR Radio, Orion, as Farm Advertising Director.
When the station closed, he joined WOC Radio as farm advertising salesman in 1976. Daryl became Farm Director in 1978. He started doing live farm broadcasting from the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in 1979. Daryl retired from WOC in 1988.
Daryl was a member of Masonic Benevolence Lodge 145, Mason City, since 1962. He was also a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s Club and chairman of the North Iowa Band Festival.
While Farm Director he was a member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, the Pork Produers, Sheep/Lamb Producers and Beef Producers in Scott County and Henry County (Ill.), and the Farm Bureaus in Henry and Rock Island counties.
Daryl was a member of the Colonel Davenport House and First Christian Church, and a former member of Wesley Methodist Church in Mason City.
He enjoyed family get-togethers, being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening, bird watching in their backyard, camping with his wife, and always having conversation with anyone, especially with World War II veterans.
