John G. Engstrom, 88, of Alpha died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at OSF St. Francis in Peoria.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ophiem.  Burial was in Alpha Cemetery, where graveside military services were conducted. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home, Alpha.
Memorials may be left to Grace Lutheran Church, Oxford American Legion Post 1197 or Tri-County Ambulance Service.
John Engstrom was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Floyd Township, Warren County, the son of John and Alice Schubar Engstrom.
He graduated from Galva High School in 1940 and married Polly Craig on Feb. 8, 1945, in Galesburg.
He was a U.S. veteran of World War II, serving in the 633rd Tank Destroyer Battalion with the Third Army in Europe.
John farmed near New Windsor and Ophiem for 37 years. He was employed as a custodian and bus driver for the AlWood school district.  For many years, he was an assistant for Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Homes in Alpha and Woodhull and Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo.
His memberships include Grace Lutheran Church and Oxford American Legion Post 1197.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Polly; one son, Ron (Cindy) Engstrom of Athens, Ill.; two daughters, Jeanine (Jim) McGaughy of Orion; Kimberly Engstrom and special friend, Jeffrey McDowell of Bloomington;  grandchildren, Bruce (Rita) McGaughy of Fremont, Calif., Michelle (GW) Fuhr of Bloomington, Jenny (Kurt) Behrent of Pawnee and Diana Engstrom of Chicago; 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Burch of McMinnville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents; brothers, Lewis and Bob; sisters, Erma Peterson and Blanch Oakman; and grandson, Todd Engstrom, preceded him in death.
