Marcene Helen Straub, 85, former resident of Orion, died Thursday, July 15, 2010, in Lincoln, Neb., where she currently resided.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Limon, Colo., on Wednesday, July 21, with burial in Flagler, Colo.
A short memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 8, at Orion United Methodist Church, after the regular 10:30 a.m. church service.
Memorials may be made to Orion United Methodist Church in Marcene’s name for Missions in Liberia.
Her husband Doug died in 1986.
Marcene taught grade school in Colorado for 30 years, and she was dedicated to preserving family history and Colorado heritage by founding the Pioneer School House in Limon. She helped maintain the Parker United Methodist Church library, Parker, Colo., and she was instrumental in raising support for reconstruction of Limon Memorial Library.
After 75 years in Colorado, Marcene moved o Orion in 2000. She was an active member of Orion United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was instrumental in helping catalogue and maintaining the church library. She attended the Thursday Bible Study at the Factory Restaurant and Bible Study Group for seven years in the home of her son Richard.
She enjoyed being part of McGuffey Readers, and the Sixth Street coffee group.
She also enjoyed grandsons Brian and Nathan, attending their sports, music and drama activities.
She loved sitting outside in the gazebo, listening to the cardinals sing, playing cards, and watching dogs Belle and Holly (“the girls”) play in the yard. Visiting the Mississippi River, eating Whitey’s ice cream, lunching at Lavender Crest and visiting with family and friends were moments she cherished.
Marcene is survived by her children, Richard and his wife Debbie of Orion, Susan and husband, Charles Shea of Tucson, Ariz. and Lehn and his wife Mary of Lincoln; her seven grandchildren, Brian Straub, Nathan Straub, Heather Shea Gasser and her husband Raymond, Ryan Charles Shea and his wife Kimberly, Douglas L. Straub III, Edward Hunter Straub, and Mitchell Harris Straub and his wife Samantha; and her three great-grandchildren, Elias Lennon Gasser, Dylan Sawyer Gasser, and Spencer Charles Shea.
