John Howard Swiger, 67, of Orion died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Beulah Presbyterian Church, rural Orion. Visitation was held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial was in Western Township Cemetery, rural Orion.
Memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established in his name.
John was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Aledo, the son of Howard Wendell and Marjorie Evelyn (Catlett) Swiger. He married E. Diane Langford on July 19, 1964, in Montpelier, Idaho.
From 1964 to 1984, he worked for Farmall, Rock Island, leaving as a foreman when it closed. From 1985 to 1999, he owned and operated Swiger Foods, Milan, and from 1999 to 2009, he was employed by the Orion school district as a bus driver.
A member of Beulah Presbyterian Church, he also served as an elder. He was a Boy Scout leader for Orion Troop 123.
He enjoyed working in his hosta garden. John was very close to his children and grandchildren, and he was a man whom all children admired and respected.
He is survived by his wife Diane; sons, J. Darin (Shari) Swiger of Rock Hill, S.C., and Jason D. (Martha) Swiger of Orion; grandchildren, Kristin and Andrew (children of Darin and Shari) and Allison and Aiden (children of Jason and Martha); his mother, Evelyn Swiger of Moline; one sister; four aunts; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
