Although St. Mary’s suffered a loss on the final day of the IESA eighth grade Class 1A state volleyball season, it was not the final match for the Saints. That came later Saturday and provided SMS with a third-place finish.
St. Mary’s (26-1) handled Thornton (Wolcott) 25-16, 25-20 in the third-place match to be just one of two teams to finish the season with a win in 1A. The other was state champion Hartsburg-Emden, who defeated Grayville in the final.
Brooke Fox led the SMS offense against Wolcott with 8 kills. She also had 8 service points, which included 5 aces. Landyn Mehrkens added 5 kills and made 2 blocks on defense at the net. Brynn Pickett and Mia Brady contributed 2 kills apiece with Ellie Wright and Brooke Collins each recording 1 kill. Brady also had 13 assists. Molly Masching served up 11 points with Mehrkens adding 5 and Sam Johns serving up 4 points. Wright had 3 points and Brady had 1 point.
Johns led the defense with 2 digs. Fox and Cami Trost had 1 dig apiece.
Pontiac lost to Grayville 25-21, 25-10 in the semifinal round. Fox delivered 4 kills, Brady had 2 and Wright and Pickett each had 1 kill. Brady also had 5 assists with Masching chalking up 1 assist and 6 service points. Mehrkens had 3 points while Wright, Fox and Brady each had 2 points.
Trost and Brady each had 4 digs on defense. Fox had 3, Masching registered 2 and Wright had 1 dig. Mehrkens made 2 blocks and Pickett had 1 block.
Pontiac opened the tournament with a 25-19, 25-17 win over Jacksonville (Our Saviour).
