Class 2A boys' track sectional meet
Pontiac senior Cam Dawson will be jumping all over O’Brien Field next week after advancing the Class 2A state finals track and field meet in three events Wednesday at the LaSalle-Peru Sectional.
Dawson is making a return trip to the campus of Eastern Illinois University after winning two jumping events and placing second in another to automatically qualify.
He will not be the lone Livingston County representative as Prairie Central will be sending two relays, and four individuals in five events, including pole vault champ Chandlar Ifft and shot put winner Zach Matson.
In all, the Hawks placed fourth at the meet with 65 points, just four behind third-place Providence Catholic. Pontiac was fifth with 50 points. All three competed at the Pontiac Relays last month.
Dawson set a season-best mark of 44 feet, 6½ inches in taking the triple jump. His mark of 6-3 won the high jump. His runnerup placement was a respectable 21-10 in the long jump, which was also a season-best effort.
Angelo Borrego fell short of qualifying by an inch in the triple after placing third at 42-7. Steven Lewis was third in the discus with a toss of 139-9. Also recording season-bests for the season were Seth Corrigan in the 3,200 run at 10 minutes, 40.55 seconds and the 4x400 relay team of Ethan Lee, Donovan Murphy, Dawson and Colton Clesson at 3:31.11. Borrego also had a season-best 21-1 in the long jump.
Ifft and Matson were first-place finishers for the Hawks, but Aiden Krieger moved on in two individual events.
Ifft won the pole vault by clearing 15 feet. Matson had a push of 50-½ to win the shot put.
Wyatt Steidinger was second to Dawson in the high jump after going 6-1 to advance. On the track, Krieger was second in the 110-meter high hurdles at 15.23 seconds. He took third in the 300 intermediates but beat the qualifying standard with his time of 40.44 seconds.
The Hawks were second in the 4x100 relay at 43.61 seconds and second in the 4x200 at 1:30.74. two other teams advanced in the 4x200 by beating the qualifying time, as well.
