Orion received a plaque for having the largest community group ever at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, June 12, in Moline.

Almost 300 people from Orion were at the Race for the Cure.
Deanna Zurcher, a breast cancer survivor, was the honorary chairman of the Orion group.

Among the other breast cancer survivors in the group were Kathy Anderson, Sylvia Taets (Zurcher’s mother), Karen Bloomberg, Stephanie Garrity, Patty Dearden, Phyllis Johnson, Deb Gainey, Sue Stroup, Debbie Nelson, Vicki Anderson, Wilma Carroll, Pat Larson and Pam Gainey.

Orion Baseball and the Orion Express ASA softball teams presented a check to the Race for the Cure.

Rather than raising money  to support their teams, the boys and girls joined forces to host Tacos for the Cure on Thursday, May 27. They raised $6,000, which Zurcher’s daughter Gabby presented on behalf of the teams. Gabby is a member of the 14-under Orin Express team, and her brother Daimon is on the 10-under Orion Baseball team.

The Orion group also contributed $3,000 in entry fees for the race.

For the first time in its 21-year history, the race had to be cancelled because of lightning. Participants were forced inside the i wireless Center.

Jazzercize instructors led a workout routine for the crowd. Most of the Orion youths jumped up on the stage to help lead the routine.

The teams showed up for Race for the Cure wearing the pink jerseys in which they would appear at tournaments that weekend.
