The Lewistown Lady Indians defeated the Seneca Raiders 25-9, 25-15 in the quarterfinals in the IESA 8-2A State Volleyball Tournament on Friday. The victory improved coach Sonya Baldwin’s team to 21-5 and advanced them to the semifinals against Illini Central.
“Our experience being here before helped with the nerves,” said Baldwin. “In the first game we kept them out of their offense.”
The first game was Lewistown’s all the way as the eventual winners raced out to leads of 5-1 and 10-2 on points from Macy Mikulich, Brooke Hampton, and Addison Yurkovich. Things really didn’t get much better for the Raiders as Lewistown’s lead grew to 17-4 on points from Chelsey Hopkins and Ella Potter.
If Seneca had any highlights in the first game it was on three consecutive points from Harleigh Varland. Her efforts closed the Raiders to 17-9 before a kill from Lanie Swearingen produced a sideout for the Lady Indians.
Grace Evans followed with four points, two of them on aces, upping the Lady Indians’ lead to 22-8. The teams then traded sideouts before Lewistown put the game away on two Mikulich points, the final one on an ace.
The Raiders proved to score the first three points in the second game. Then as the action moved forward, Seneca held leads of 5-2, 9-7, and 11-8 before the Lady Indians took over the game. Four points from Hampton, the final one after a Seneca timeout, gave Lewistown the lead at 13-12. The Raiders came back though, knotting the game at 15-15 on a sideout.
However, the point on the sideout proved to be Seneca’s (19-3) final one in the match. Mikulich’s kill gave the ball back to Lewistown and put the serve in Potter’s hands. All she did was serve out the final nine points, only slowed down momentarily by a Seneca timeout.
