Dan Roach’s hands were shaking as the bids for Hillcrest Resort went higher.
He was one of only two bidders for the 40-acre golf course, swimming pool and camping facility in rural Orion.
U.S. Marshal Nathan Bostrom conducted the auction on Tuesday morning, May 7, in the corridor just inside the public entrance to the Henry County Courthouse in Cambridge.
The marshal started bidding at $169,818, the amount needed to repay the Small Business Administration for disaster assistance loans to the owners of Hillcrest Resort.
Roach’s successful bid was $285,000. After a career in law enforcement, the Plainfield resident turned to a second career providing peer counseling for first responders who experienced traumatic events, and for their families.
He said he wants to turn Hillcrest into a retreat center for those first responders and their families. Also, it will host Christian retreats.
His wife, Tammy (Youngberg) Roach, is a graduate of Orion High School. She is the adult ministries pastor of Alleluia Lutheran Church, Naperville.
