Dear Editor,

As a retired Registered Nurse and Health Sciences Professor, I am very concerned about an overreaching federal bill, HR 3599, which has been introduced by Congressman Steve King. If passed, this federal bill would nullify hundreds of state and local laws that protect food safety, animal welfare, labor standards, the environment, and the promotion of local agriculture — just to name a few. In other words, it would undermine traditional areas of state control. More than 70 groups oppose the legislation.
States have historically possessed broad powers to protect the health, safety and welfare of their citizens by regulating the sale of goods and service within their borders. Thus, this bill tramples on the fundamental principles of states’ rights.
I encourage you to oppose the King bill for these reasons. Please call your Congressional Representative and ask him or her to oppose H$ 3599. For those who live in District 18, call Darin LaHood: 202-225-6201.
